I learned that its important not to wipe out any prior knowledge students have picked up from their family members and friends.
Many times conversation is what gets the writing process flowing. It helps to say words out loud before actually writing it down on paper.
Its just as important to get comfortable saying new words as it is spelling and writing them.
2 things I found interesting:
I found that they said that internet, text messages, and things of this sort are learning tools as well.
The fact that it makes a difference where the writers culture is rooted.
